About the Department

Roinn an Bhéaloidis: Department of Folklore and Ethnology has evolved over a thirty year period teaching, researching and writing in at least two languages, sometimes more. The research fostered in the department has diverse and heterogeneous origins. It owes much to the evolving nature of social research in Europe since the sixteenth century in both native learned Irish traditions and the imperial and global traditions. Interests include the folkloristic, social scientific and ethnological or anthropological. There are European and global interests alongside Irish knowledge traditions. The discipline is still a new one and has great potential for innovation and originality.

Folklore and Ethnology has been to the forefront of innovative ethnological research in Ireland and internationally. The results have been published in peer reviewed and international journals and are continually leading the debates on cultural processes in Ireland (see publications link). The department publishes its own research journal Béascna, an electronic newsletter Nua and a community project newsletter The Archive. It offers public lectures, prizes for storytelling as well as undergraduate ones. Such leadership has been a primary concern of the department for many years.
